A Boat to Ourselves in Lan Ha

Limestone islands · A night on a boat

WHY GO NOW

A first night in Hai Phong to meet the group over the city's food, then a night on a ten-cabin boat in Lan Ha Bay with only our group aboard. Out on the water in small boats, a swim when conditions allow, sunset on deck and dinner on board.

Lan Ha Bay sits next to Ha Long Bay, with the same limestone islands. Boats here are sold by the cabin, so you share them with whoever else booked. To have one to yourselves you have to take the whole boat, and nobody travelling alone can do that. We reserve all ten cabins and fill them with the group.

The boat follows its usual route. What changes is everything on board: when dinner is, how long we stay on deck at sunset, and who you are sharing it with.

The first night is in Hai Phong, an hour's drive from where we board. The city is known for its crab noodles and seafood, and we spend the evening eating there together, so nobody meets for the first time on the gangway.

April is when the bay warms up after winter. The days reach about 26 degrees and the sea is about 24. It can be cloudy, and there are some showers.

November is the drier and clearer of the two. The summer storms are over in most years, it rains on about six days in the month, and the sea is still warm, at about 25 degrees.

We do not go from May to October. That is the hot, wet season, and the time of year when storms can stop boats from sailing. From December to March the air and the sea are cooler, and the sky is often grey.

‍

WHAT WE HANDLE

The route and meals

We reserve the whole boat, arrange the night in Hai Phong and the transfers, and bring the group together. You do not have to arrange a charter or find people to share it with.

‍

THE EXPERIENCE

A night aboard a ten-cabin boat in Lan Ha Bay, with only our group and the crew on it.

‍

WHO THIS IS FOR

This is for you if you want a night on the water with the boat to yourselves, and would never charter one with strangers you found online.

If that sounds like your kind of weekend, add your name.

‍

DATES DON'T WORK?

Register anyway and tell us when you could go. If enough people ask for the same dates, we add a trip for them.

‍

WHO THIS JOURNEY IS FOR

This journey is for you if:

  • You have dreamed of seeing the northern lights, but never wanted the stress of planning an Arctic itinerary.
  • You enjoy travelling independently, but appreciate having the difficult logistics taken care of.
  • You like meeting people naturally, without being expected to spend every moment together.
  • You believe memorable journeys come from good design, not busy schedules.
  • You would rather have fewer places and more time than rush through checklist attractions.

‍

Probably not the right fit if you want every hour of every day guided and scheduled.

‍

THE LOCOSOLO CIRCLE

Every journey includes access to the LocoSolo Circle — a private community for travellers joining the same departure. Join in as much or as little as you like.

‍

Day by day, paced on purpose.

Northern lights. Dramatic fjords. Fishing villages at the edge of the world. A coastal voyage through Arctic Norway. Every difficult detail already taken care of.

You are on the invitation list.
If this trip goes ahead, you'll be among the first invited to book.
Want a say in what the final trip looks like?
On your own, that usually means paying for a private tour. Here, being early is enough. It takes a few minutes, and you can skip anything you do not have a view on. We look at everyone's answers together before we lock the dates, what to include, how much free time to leave and the final price.
What would make this trip worth going for?
Choose the three that matter most to you.
Would you add any of these?
Choose any. None of these is confirmed yet, and some would cost extra.
When could you realistically go?
Where would you most likely fly from?
This helps us plan when the trip should start and finish.
How much personal time would you want during the trip?
What is the most you would realistically consider paying for this trip, before flights?
We look at everyone's answers together when we shape the final trip. Your answer does not change the price you are offered. Assume it is per person and includes a twin-share room, ground transport, some meals and the main group activities. A private room would cost extra.
What room arrangement would you prefer?
If you wanted your own room, what is the most extra you would realistically consider paying for it, for the whole trip?
Would you be interested in adding days before or after the group trip?
Who would you want as the main person travelling with the group?
Specialist local guides may also join for particular experiences.
ABOUT THE GROUP
Skip this if you prefer. It helps us plan rooms and the group, and does not affect your invitation.
Which age range are you in?
Which best describes you?
Would any of these make you more likely to join?
Choose any.
Anything you'd like us to keep in mind before booking opens?
A preference, concern, or something you'd particularly like to see included.
Thanks, this is genuinely useful! We'll look across everyone's answers when deciding things like when we go, what we include, how much personal time to build in and how the trip should feel.
