A Walking Weekend in the Mae Chan Hills
“Walk through forest and tea country, with lunch in a village and free time around it.”
Forests · Mountains · Walks and trails
The rainy season in the hills of Chiang Rai lasts until October. Go right after it, and the forest is still green and the waterfalls are still running.
Late October is the greener of the two, and it can still bring a shower. Early November is drier, and the mornings are cooler.
Wait much longer and the hills dry out. From about February there is smoke from seasonal burning. So this is the time to be on foot here.
Much of the walking here crosses community forest and farmland.
We arrange the walk with a local guide and the community whose land it is.
The day is built for stopping, not covering distance.
Where the route allows, there is a shorter way back if you have had enough.
Good food is part of the point. Some meals are together. For the rest, we will suggest places.
Walking is one day of the trip, not all of it.
That day is slow and guided: forest, then tea, with time to stop, and a community lunch along the way.
Around it: a gentle nature walk, tea or coffee in the hills, a waterfall where it makes sense, and slow mornings at the hillside base.
This is for you if you like a day on your feet in a landscape and do not want a trek.
This is not a trek. It is one good day on foot, with slow days around it.
If that sounds like you, add your name.
Register anyway and tell us when you could go. If enough people ask for the same dates, we add a trip for them.
Probably not the right fit if you want every hour of every day guided and scheduled.
Every journey includes access to the LocoSolo Circle — a private community for travellers joining the same departure. Join in as much or as little as you like.
Northern lights. Dramatic fjords. Fishing villages at the edge of the world. A coastal voyage through Arctic Norway. Every difficult detail already taken care of.
The itinerary may be adjusted to best suit your needs, weather, and operating conditions. For safety, we reserve the right to suspend participation at any time if a guest's medical condition or behaviour poses a risk to themselves or others.
The full list of what is included comes with the dates and the price, before you decide whether to book.
The trip starts at Chiang Mai airport and ends at Chiang Rai airport.
Flights
Not included, by design, so you can use your miles, choose your airline, and add days before or after. Once the dates are set, we recommend flights that make the most of your time and use the fewest days of leave, and we check typical fares.
If there is a trip you have been saving for "one day", it might already been on the 2027 shortlist.
