Lofoten to Tromsø in Autumn
“Proper days outside in autumn colour, with dark nights for the Northern Lights.”
Northern Lights · Autumn colours · Walks and trails
The mountains are still dark against the sea. Autumn colour spreads across the lower slopes. Fishing villages sit between steep peaks and fjords, and on calm days the whole landscape reflects back from the water.
There is still enough daylight to spend proper time outside: walking, exploring villages, stopping beside the fjords and seeing Lofoten up close.
Then night falls. By late September, the dark nights have returned and the Northern Lights are possible again. On a clear, still night, you may see the aurora in the water as well as overhead.
We handle the driving through Lofoten, and part of the way north is by coastal ship from Svolvær.
Autumn weather changes quickly, so we choose the walks on the day. Where the route allows, there is a shorter option if you do not want the longer walk. You do not need to be a serious hiker.
5 of the 6 nights are planned at stays chosen with Northern Lights viewing in mind. We looked at where and when the Northern Lights are most likely before we planned this.
Many Northern Lights tours are a chase: hours in a minibus after dark, and back past midnight. We plan the overnight stops so that, on most nights, you can step outside and look at the sky.
If you would still like to try a chase once, we can arrange one as an optional extra.
Walk through Lofoten before winter arrives: dark mountains, changing colour, fjords, beaches, fishing villages and reflections in the water. Warm up over lunch after a morning outside, then take the coastal voyage north from Svolvær.
At selected stops, the time is yours. Wander a fishing village. Find a café with a view. Take your camera down to the water. Or stay with the view a little longer while the others move on. In Tromsø, there is free time to see the city however you like.
(This is the shape of the trip, not the final plan. Once it goes ahead, we set the exact route, stays and days with our partner, shaped by what the people who register tell us.)
This is for you if you want to see Lofoten in autumn, not simply travel north for the Northern Lights.
You want colour, mountains, fjords and days outside. You enjoy walking without wanting a hiking holiday. You would love to see the Northern Lights, without every evening becoming a chase.
You like optional company for walks, meals and evenings, and you also want time to enjoy a place on your own.
Register anyway and tell us when you could go. If enough people ask for the same dates, we add a trip for them.
Probably not the right fit if you want every hour of every day guided and scheduled.
Every journey includes access to the LocoSolo Circle — a private community for travellers joining the same departure. Join in as much or as little as you like.
Northern lights. Dramatic fjords. Fishing villages at the edge of the world. A coastal voyage through Arctic Norway. Every difficult detail already taken care of.
The itinerary may be adjusted to best suit your needs, weather, and operating conditions. For safety, we reserve the right to suspend participation at any time if a guest's medical condition or behaviour poses a risk to themselves or others.
Join the invitation list early and you get a say before we lock the final plan and price: what to add, when to go and what you would realistically pay.
The trip starts in Lofoten, at Leknes airport, and ends in Tromsø.
Flights
Not included, by design, so you can use your miles, choose your airline, and add days before or after. Once the dates are set, we recommend flights that make the most of your time and use the fewest days of leave, and we check typical fares.
Flying from somewhere else? Arrive in Leknes in time for the Day 1 group transfer and leave Tromsø after the Day 7 one. Tell us where you are travelling from and we will recommend a routing.
If there is a trip you have been saving for "one day", it might already been on the 2027 shortlist.
